by DuWayne Charles AUGUST 21, 2002. The chairman of the Miami-Dade Christian Coalition was arrested last Friday, charged with falsely witnessing a signature on the petition that has placed the repeal of the county's four-year old gay rights ordinance on the ballot on September 10. If convicted of the third-degree felony, Anthony Verdugo, 40, could be sentenced to up to five years in prison. Three other men were also arrested as part of a year-long criminal investigation into whether fraud was committed in the collection of more than 51,000 petition signatures by Take Back Miami-Dade, the Christian Coalition spin-off that Verdugo co-chairs. Verdugo's lawyer, Rosa Armesto, said the arrests were politically motivated. "This is the work of the homosexual, bisexual and transsexual mafia that wants to destroy our families," she said. The arrests won't stop the anti-gay referendum from taking place.
