Oct. 2, 2000. Mexico's Soraya Jimenez, 23, won the gold medal in the women's 58 kg weightlifting competition. It was Mexico's first Olympic gold medal in 20 years.
On her return to Mexico, she got a hero's welcome, mariachi band and all. The media asked her if she was thinking about entering politics. She declined.
