July 31, 2000. Peruvian President Alberto K. Fujimori was inaugurated to a constitutionally questionable third 5-year term on July 28, despite charges of voting fraud by both opposition leaders and international observers.
Demonstrators outside the Congressional Chamber where Fujimori took his oath of office were turned back by water cannon, bullets, and tear gas.
Apparently the stink was equally strong inside, since some opposition Congress members also wore gas masks.
