The U.S.'s Newest Lab-Rats
July 24, 2000. Unbeknownst to most Ecuadoreans, the U.S. government has begun using their pristine rainforest as a laboratory to test out the dangerous fungus Fusarium oxysporum, soon to be used to kill coca plants in Colombia.

The experiments in Ecuador are reportedly to ascertain the "possible side effects to humans and legal vegetation," the Miami daily El Nuevo Herald revealed today.

The fungus, originally developed as a biological weapon during the Cold War, was almost tested last year in Florida, U.S.A., but the idea was dropped out of environmental concerns.
